Autologous Cell Sampling Devices for Medical Treatment

PJ4: Autologous cell sampling devices for medical treatment

Autologous cell sampling devices for medical treatment are a technology by which the patient’s own bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells are accumulated in the device and collected outside the body, and then used for cell therapy at the site of injury. We are developing technology to directly collect cells present in the body by inserting bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell mobilization factor into a device and implanting it in the body, for example subcutaneously. By filling the implantation device with a substance we have discovered for inducing mesenchymal stem cells and then implanting it subcutaneously for a fixed period, the patient’s own mesenchymal stem cells that accumulate in this device are collected and used for treatment. These medical devices are expected to be effective for a wide range of diseases in which mesenchymal stem cell transplantation is reported to have a therapeutic effect. In a clinical setting, after a physician has administered local anesthetic to a patient’s skin, an incision in the skin ranging in size from several millimeters to several centimeters is made. A device that has been pre-loaded with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell mobilizing factor is inserted subcutaneously via the incision in the skin. Several days after insertion, the device is removed from the body and the cells that have accumulated in the device are directly administered to the damaged tissue (the affected site). The surgical procedure to insert the device is a simple operation that can be performed at an outpatient visit.
